Wherryman’s Way

Kimberly and I live really close to the Norfolk Broads, and we decided we’d walk part of Wherryman’s Way marked on this route.

The walk was really pretty but we needed to wear wellies because the grass was damp.

The broads are in a national park and there are all sorts of different birds and wildlife around. Kim and I even saw a barn owl out as it got a bit darker.

Half way through the walk (the part where you turn back or take the railway back to Yarmouth) is a strange pub that time forgot called the Berney Arms. You can’t get to the pub by road so you can only reach it by walking, railway or by boat. There were a few old men at the bar discussing their love for teenage and young girls so after a drink we headed back because as Kim put it, the atmosphere was a bit “rapey”.

Luckily we got home safe as we had a tasty lemon meringue pie stashed in the fridge.

  Apple Picking

In America apple picking is popular in the autumn and Kim was feeling a little homesick for some autumnal activities so we took a trip to the White House Farm in Norwich.

We paid £3 to fill a whole carrier bag of apples (you’d be surprised how many apples you can fit in a carrier bag!)  and they had all sorts of different types of apple in their orchard.

We also visited their pumpkin patch to pick out some little decorative pumpkins in the run up to Halloween.

We made a delicious apple pie in our new pie dish (it’s an octopus winking, in case you wondered) .

We also made some apple puffs…. and we still have a fridge full of apples!

White House Farm also have all sorts of fruit to pick so in the summer months I think we’ll revisit them.

Winterton On Sea

We went to the cinema the other day to say the film adaption of Bill Bryson’s book A Walk In The Woods (I’m a die hard Bill Bryson fan) but we went for a nice walk ourselves lately when we took a trip down the road to Winterton on Sea.

We parked up and walked towards the beach but instead of going onto the beach we took a left across dunes all covered in heather which was really pretty, we saw about a million dragonflies.

Then we took a little detour before turning away from the beach because sometimes there are apparently seals on this part of the beach but I think we were too early because we didn’t see any.

Then we walked across some farm land and through some forested areas and Kim saw pheasants for the first time. We walked past the ruin of St Marys Church which was still in pretty good condition. It must have been abandoned ages ago because there’s a fairly sturdy looking tree growing through what must have been it’s centre.

Just before the end of our walk we took a little side track down past some allotments and came to a beautiful little enclosed duck pond and picnic area that was maintained by the allotment owners and we fed the ducks.

Also I discovered ducks don’t like popcorn… in case you wondered. They did like granary bread though.

Gardening Time

When we moved in, our garden was in need of a tidy up.

And our cats love the weeds.

We had a good clearing of them today and found a lot of wild life including a few caterpillars.

Turns out we had even more weeds than I thought! And Kim discovered what stinging nettles are (“OH MY GOD!! OUCH!).

But our gardening assistant kept us going.

And now it all looks strangely bare.

Ready to be filled up… we should really get some plant pots.

And after a hard morning of weeding and sweeping we earned our elevenses.

We’ve been up to quite a lot lately, we went to a circus festival which was OK, also a food festival which was pretty small. Goldie the car survived a trip to Barking and back to visit my Great Aunt and Uncle and Cousin and whilst we were there we went for a trip to IKEA. Kim had never been to IKEA so I had to show her the ropes. I think she liked it but she didn’t get as excited as her first trip to Argos (“Oh look!! That’s us! That’s our number on the screen!!!”).

But she did very impressively put this coffee table together all by herself.

Everything else is settling nicely, albeit very frugally, I’m still enjoying my new job (but still waiting for my nursing registration pin to come through!) and our house is starting to feel like a home.
