Newport RI

Another year has passed and it was Kim’s birthday again, this year we took a little weekend trip to Newport in Rhode Island which was a very easy hour and half drive away.

When we got there Friday afternoon we headed straight to the harbour for dinner.

There’s a lot of money in Newport, it’s a fairly pricey area and there are lots of big boats and big houses, designer shops etc. But it is also where the rich people used to build their summer mansions in the ‘gilded age’ (think Great Gatsby) along the cliffs.

There’s also a big maritime history in Newport and we found a lot of ivory being sold (!). Now I thought that this would be illegal but it turns out the law changes depending on what animal the ivory comes from (e.g. walrus, whales, elephants, rhinos etc), how old it is, if you take it across state lines etc. It was pretty horrible.

Kim’s parents bought us a touristy trip on a sailboat around the harbour which was really fun, they told stories about the area and had drinks.

Including one about this funny house called ‘Clingstone’ built in the middle of nowhere where the owner took the city to court, and won, to stop paying property taxes as he said the city doesn’t plough any roads for him, collect his garbage etc… which is fair enough! You can rent this house out for thousands if you don’t mind spending years on the waiting list.

On Saturday I discovered how to use a waffle iron at our hotel.

And we set off out to look around the Newport Mansions. These are fancy Mansions that were previously owned by a lot of wealthy miserable people and then sold off and preserved.

There was a rather good free audio tour in each house as you walked round at your own pace with information about the house and who used to live there.

Each family described seemed more tragic and unhappy than the last.

I’m not sure what they had to moan about though, money might not buy happiness but I’d be willing to give it a go.

For all the mansions lovely decor, they were not air conditioned and it was a very very hot day and all the mansions were stuffed with other tourists milling about.

Thankfully most of the schools had gone back so there were hardly any children so that was nice not to add screaming to the heat! Although looking round dusty old mansions would probably be a small child’s idea of hell. The owners of all of the mansions were clearly nouveau riche and did not think it was at all tacky to stuff their New England houses with Italian marble, to floral, to gothic cathedral style rooms leading into completely different Grecian themed ballrooms.

One house even had a Chinese tea house in the garden! It was like each house had tried to out do the next set of neighbours to seem more daring and exotic.

We stopped for lunch in the tea house.

And then it was back on the road again. On a map the Mansions are deceptively close to one another, but what you forget is that each one is massive and takes ages to walk between them. They had car parks for each one but a couple of times I said “Oh the next house is only next door, let’s just walk” to Kim – only to regret it miles later in the blistering heat (I exaggerate, but still!). There were lots of these little two seater scooter things zooming about between the houses, I got the impression that they annoyed all other road users but I thought they looked quite fun.

But we soldiered on. It was about $30 something to see 5 houses and you could pick which ones you saw – you could see more but it took us the entire day just to see 5 so you would have to spread more over a few days at least. I thought the price was a little steep at first but after looking around the size of the houses, the upkeep, the quality of all the tours and all those staff members it seemed very reasonable.

We started out with the biggest houses owned by the Vanderbilts and the such like.

And worked our way down to the slightly smaller mansions.

In the smaller mansions we got a tour guide instead of an audio tour, all for that one admission price.

The tour guides were great but the small tour group size made it all the more noticeable when we got stuck with a man-splainer who seemed to think he should be running the tour… a different one each time, what a treat for us!

Then we went out for a fancy dinner.

On Sunday (Kim’s actual birthday) we headed back to the fur babies and I constructed this year’s cake. You all remember the rules, birthday person chooses the theme, and the non-birthday-person must construct the cake with NO COOKING. This year Kim didn’t know what to pick and chose a surprise so I chose to depict a homage to the epic classic 80s song ‘Africa’ by Toto as Kim enjoys singing it loudly with the wrong lyrics at the top of her lungs. I was pleased with the results.

And just like that it’s September… crazy.

My 29th

I’m not a big birthday fan, another year closer to death, but usually my day is a disaster. This birthday was nice a one, I spent the morning at work which was fine, I had a second birthday cake from my lovely co-workers. I came home and packed and then Kimmy and I drove to Westbrook by the coast in Connecticut to stay a couple of nights.

We had a nice comfy room and there was a pool and jaccuzi we floated about in for a bit.

We also discovered the world’s FINEST water, the absolute finest, and it could be ours for just $5. I had to fight the temptation to open it. Especially after I got curious about what made it the finest water and discovered it was full of arsenic when compared to tap water…um… no.

Instead we settled for cocktails and prosecco with a nice dinner.

In the morning we explored the hotel and walked to the beach.

The house next door to the beach was for sale for $1.5 million.

Then we drove a couple minutes to Madison.

We went to see a movie but we were early so we browsed a little bit and found a great bookshop.

There was a slight political undertone…

Madison seemed like a wealthy place and they had a cute arts cinema, we saw a movie called Lady Bird which Kim really liked, I thought it was OK but it was a little depressing.

That evening we went to a cajun/creole restaurant, we had to wait for ages for a table but it was worth it. We got cornbread and biscuits while we waited (Victoria sponge and scones in English).

Then we went halves on three meals (we skipped lunch so it was allowed).

The next morning Kim had booked brunch at the hotel that had “the best brunch in CT”, it was massive, it just went on and on, they had everything.

They even had an ice sculpture with prawns!?

So I got to eat the best meal of the day in luxury watching the choppy waves.

On the way back I finally found out why the bridge in Willimantic has frogs on it, there was a drought in 1758 and the frogs fought over the last bits of water, they made such a noise that the people living in the next village thought that either Canadian or French soldiers or Indians were coming to attack them so they all got their guns and were armed and ready. The next day when no attack came they found zillions of dead frogs and the Battle of the Frogs was legend.

Kim went to shop for supplies, I caught up with the important news.

I got a tasty dinner made by my Kimmy.

Then I was presented with my special cake construction, it’s a reconstruction of my favourite boy.

Mr Barclay.

My Birthday

It was my 27th birthday yesterday, I can’t believe it was but it really was. I don’t feel as though I’m almost 30, yet here I am. As with most birthdays (as I was assured by my mother) when you get older, it was rather bad. It started off well with a nice omelette in bed and tea in a tiny mug.

And progressed to some nice gifts that I opened.

But then it sort of went down hill from there. I popped out to the shops to buy a nice dinner and wine for later only to come back from the shops and the post be delivered containing a birthday card that had a voucher in it for the exact same shop I had just been to and bought my goodies, typical! Then the plan after that was to pop into town and have a spot of afternoon tea, we looked at two places online on the same street and reasoned we’d have a look in both and pick the better one. One was closed when we got there, the other said they required 24 hours notice before making afternoon tea. They served cream tea, sandwiches and cakes… why they needed 24 hours notice to put all those things on a tiered cake plate is beyond me. So then we walked a few streets over to find that the third option for afternoon tea only served salmon sandwiches.

I don’t understand the world’s love of salmon. Especially smoked salmon in a sandwich, yeuch. The only advantage to eating a cold slab of fleshy pink raw fish in a sandwich, so far as I can see it, is that afterwards less of it exists in the world. And even that is not a good enough reason. So after this disappointment we went to Sainsburys and decided to buy all the components of afternoon tea for a carpet picnic. But when we got there they had no clotted cream as they had replaced it with 3 different kinds of brandy butter for Christmas… it’s November! So that was all extremely disappointing and in the end for my birthday we did absolutely nothing and it was fairly crap.

In other news though I got a Jurassic Park birthday cake… no really it’s Jurassic Park.

And enjoyed a nice M&S dinner which I bought.

And after the couple of bottles of Cava I bought were gone, Kim and I became the UK champions of Connecticut in the quiz app I downloaded. So there was that.  I can hardly wait for my next birthday.

Kim’s Birthday Cake Construction

This week was Kim’s birthday, it’s a tradition in my family to fill the house with balloons (or bedroom, whatever) and so I was up the night before at 3.30am blowing up 50 balloons with two cats watching me looking very confused.

But it is also my new tradition to demand stupid birthday cakes and it’s only fair that I should make one in return right? This years theme was The Little Mermaid. I gathered supplies from Tescos.

I decided to recreate the scene with the shark, you know, this one.

First I made a pirate ship out of two cherry Madeira cakes and waffles stuck on with icing.

Then I created Ariel (be impressed by my super artistic skills).

    Then came fondant Flounder

And a shark to boot.

Then I had to make some sea water to add some structural stability so I turned my Betty Crocker icing blue.

Bluer!

Perfect, add the masts.

Decorations time…

And then candles! All done, 1 silly birthday cake.

I’ve requested Jurassic Park this year, I can’t wait.

My 26th

I realised I never mentioned it was my birthday last week. It was a pretty quiet day because it was the first day of placement (boo) so I spent my day there then at home… so that was deeply thrilling. I don’t really feel older because on the run up to my birthday I kept telling people I was 26 before I even was, this has been going on for at least 2 months… I think I have early onset dementia.
Anyways, before my actual birthday I met up with a couple girls from my cohort and we went for afternoon tea (I know, I know, it’s an obsession), we went to the Georgian House Hotel on St Giles in Norwich.
It was really nice there actually, surprisingly nice. Afternoon tea cost £13.50 and you got unlimited hot drinks, four sandwiches, one cheese scone, one fruit scone (by the way, if you pronounce ‘scone’ as scohhhwwne instead of scon then you’re pretentious AND lame!), one mini victoria sponge cake, a flapjack, a mini lemon meringue AND a super rich chocolate truffle thing.
That is a lot for £13.50 and the staff we were so so attentive, they were really friendly. Also they wrapped up left overs for our sick friend like a swan… awww… you guys.
So yeah that was nice and happy birthday to me, one step closer to death… I mean my thirties. Ho hum.

The Boyfriend’s Birthday

On Sunday it was the boyfriend’s birthday, he’s only ever have had one birthday party in his life and it was at McDonalds – the truth is he just doesn’t want one! So this year instead of asking if he’d like one I decided he would be getting one whether he wanted it or not and invited just a few of our friends round that live nearby.
I decided as the boyfriend had never had a traditional kids style birthday party I’d get balloons, party bags, games to play and a badly home made cake. These are the boys party bags…
And the girls…
Barclay the cat absolutely loved the rubber bouncy balls and he and I had a great time playing with those for sometime. He didn’t however like the balloons which I filled the lounge with in the morning, I put banners up yet the boyfriend was none the wiser until later when his friends arrived.
And out came the party food and pizza and then the cake.
There were games and medals, three legged race, balloon race… here’s the victor of the mummy game.
Birthday parties forever!!

Birthday Train Cake

The boyfriend and I have a tradition where each birthday we make each other a silly cake. This year for the boyfriend I decided to make a train cake and by make, I mean cheat and just stick together. First I got two Madeira cakes and chopped them into blocks for the train and the carriage.
Then I got some Betty Crocker chocolate fudge icing and iced the blocks.
Chopped up some strawberry laces for track, added Oreos for wheels, brownies and a mini roll for the train.
Then I piled up sweets on the carriage with a bit more icing.
Et voila, 40 minutes and you have a birthday cake.

My Birthday

Well I had a super birthday yesterday, I woke up and opened my presents.

Chillaxed and watched cartoons because I’m cool.
Put my cards up.
And then had some friends round for take out pizza. You may remember the boyfriend’s cake challenge I issued him last year of a cherry bakewell castle complete with moat and drawbridge. This year I asked for a treasure chest and I think he did rather well!

Birthday Cake

It was my birthday yesterday, I asked for a cherry bakewell castle complete with drawbridge and moat and look how well the boyfriend delivered!
Very impressed !
The rest of my day was spent on placement in hospital so I was glad to get home and open my cards and gifts as you can imagine.
