Royal Wedding

Kim is a big fan of the royal family so after a bit of a heavy one the previous night with a colleague I found myself getting up at 6am with her to watch the nuptials.

Then we continued the royal theme with afternoon tea at Mrs Bridges Pantry – a British themed tea room about 45 minutes away.

Mrs Bridges Pantry is tiny so you have book tables. I heard a couple of English accents there but it was mostly Americans. One group of American women had dressed up and wore fancy hats.

They had a set menu to celebrate that started with curried zucchini (courgette) soup, I thought this sounded a bit weird but it was delish.

And then all sorts of little bites.

After that we browsed some shops on the way home including Family Dollar which is a bit like a weirder version of Pound Land only everything has different prices. I was tempted by such goods as Primates of the Caribbean.

A cushion to annoy the wife with.

And home drug tests for pot. All necessary stuff.

I’ve been trying out some different gyms the past couple of weeks.

One that has the slogan ‘Fitness for the human race’… I mean what else would want to use the gym if not humans? Also, nothing that isn’t human would be able to read the sign anyway so it’s obsolete, if any horses come in to use the treadmill they’d still need to be redirected. Did human resources just used to be called ‘resources’ until a gorilla applied for a job so they changed it? More research needed.

Rob & Jen’s Wedding

It’s been a humid week this week, the kitties have been keeping cool in the shade.

I had a couple of job interviews (one I liked the sound of and one I didn’t) and I got offered the job for one of them (the one I liked!) so that’s good news, the job is 20 hours a week in the same town I live in so no commute (wasn’t looking forward to that when it starts snowing!). The job process is pretty much the same as here except here they are quite nosy about what all your previous salaries have been when you apply and you’re meant to send them a thank you card afterwards… even though you are the one who has gone to the trouble of going to an interview and filling out applications etc. I settled on a thank you email. I finally finished off painting the upstairs bedroom and made a start on the lounge. My brother messaged me to say Bruce Forsyth died, I refrained from telling Kim too much about Bruce Forsyth after I made the grave error of explaining who Cilla Black was when she died and then had to put up with weeks of Kim singing ‘surprise surprise’ and saying ‘ta-ra chuck’ afterwards in a dodgy accent that was meant to be Liverpudlian but came out Indian (as all her accents do).

This weekend we drove up through Rhode Island to Massachusetts to Plymouth to the wedding of Jen & Rob. Jen’s family lives next door to Kim’s family so they played together as kids and Jen has been a really supportive friend to Kim over the years so it was lovely to be invited. Usually long car journeys are a bit dull but the roads in America seem a lot more scenic than in England, perhaps it’s because it’s still a novelty but there’s a lot of forest surrounding the roads usually and big boulders etc. Also if you can get on a route that takes you through towns you get to see all the weird country shops and have a shufti at the houses… like this stunner.

When we got to the hotel in Plymouth (which as you can imagine is very Mayflower themed) we had a little pilgrim painting in our room which I thought was sort of funny because it looks like Jesus and an Indian are eating garlic bread together.

Jen & Rob had wedding gift bags waiting for us at the hotel and for Kim’s parents who were also invited. Kim’s parent’s neighbours are all really close friends so all the neighbours were there. The bag has a bit of a New England theme and there was some taffy in it I haven’t tried yet.

So the weather had been nice all day until immediately before the ceremony was due to start where upon it started to rain cats and dogs so they had to change the wedding venue three times to work around the weather. We were sat at a table with all of Kim’s parent’s neighbours and also some nice work colleagues of Jen’s who got chatting to us. We had a pretty good view of the ceremony and it was so so hot and humid because of the rain but we had a cool breeze from where the tent openings were so I think we had a good spot. They had a very good band there and also Jen’s best friend sang accompanied during the ceremony which was nice.

So they had the ceremony and then there was a cocktail hour which was fun and I met lots of people who Kim knew and they were all very friendly (‘oh Hayley I’ve heard so much about you’ etc.. whilst I smile and nod and have no clue who they are! Until afterwards Kim relates some story she’s told me, that’s so and so who did such and such – ohhh!). After the cocktail hour we had the toasts and then it was time for food, they had different stations buffet style so you could pick what you wanted which I was glad of because I’m a fussy eater and some well known dishes in the USA I have no idea about. There was a New England station, a carving station and an Italian station. I devoured the Italian station, I’m well known for hating roast dinners so I gave that station a wide birth and I wasn’t brave enough for the New England station. At a wedding you don’t want to fill up too much you see… have to eat strategically. I tried some of Kim’s cornbread and I still think it just tastes like Victoria sponge cake… I don’t understand why you’d want it with a main course.

And then for dessert I had some carrot cake. It’s funny the differences in wedding music when everyone was dancing and the popular ‘oldie’ songs compared to the UK ‘oldies’. There was even a shuttle to take us back to the door step of the hotel so we were very well looked after and it was a lovely night.

Getting Married

So Kimberly and I eloped, we went up into the mountains by a big frozen lake with two marriage commissioners who are married to each other (one came to be our witness) and our photographer, and we said our I dos. It was unseasonably warm for Banff in February so we were really lucky for our outdoor ceremony.

Saying marriage vows feels intense! These are my flowers, we picked them up after we had our hair and make up done.

And these are Kim’s.

After the ceremony we went to the Fairmont in Banff which looks like a castle and had afternoon tea which was really special, all in our dresses.

Everything was really tasty.

And the view was beautiful (although every view is beautiful here!).

And after our waiter brought us over chocolate cake to celebrate as a gift… I don’t need to tell you we were already so full!!!

We had time to rifle through our little marriage pack with all the vows etc in them so that was nice.

And in the evening we drove to Lake Louise and went to a super fancy restaurant for fondue, as I switched on the radio it started to play White Wedding by Billy Idol (on mountain fm), which has to be a sign! Fondue was so good.

Also we met a bison. So that was our super chilled out wedding day, no stress, no drama, just a lovely day.

The Wedding Fayre

Nadine my lovely friend got engaged at Christmas and so we decided that we would take a little trip to a wedding fayre with her mum Sally to have a look round. It was held at the Great Yarmouth Racecourse – it was a job to get to it because of an accident on the Acle straight but we made it eventually!
I’ve never been to a wedding fayre before (never needed to!) but there were a ton of little stalls offering all sorts of cars, photographs, DJs, invites and stationery, seat covers (never realised how much seat covers cost!), entertainers, sweet stalls, florists, hair and beauty, honeymoons, decor… there were lots there!
I don’t think Sally and I were very helpful because whilst Nadine was quizzing a singer/DJ we were being entertained by the magician.
Nadine wasn’t as impressed as Sally and I haha but I think that’s just because she couldn’t work out how he did it.
Look it’s one of my rings on his key ring! Sally and I decided we would just have a party for ourselves with a magician. Nadine’s not invited.
Needless to say it made me appreciate how much work goes into planning a wedding – think I’ll be eloping!

2nd Wedding of 2012

Well the boyfriend and I had a very enjoyable Friday as we went to my cousin’s wedding. It was a really lovely ceremony and it was held at Richmond Park.

The wedding had a travel theme and each table was themed for places the bride and groom have travelled (and they’ve very well travelled!).
My family and I were on the Brazil table.
Our name cards were little paper aeroplanes made out of maps.
We had lots of fun throwing the paper aeroplanes at each other after dinner until my youngest cousin (I say young, 30) chucked one at my great aunt’s hair ha ha.
Dinner was really nice, the fishcake starter was really really tasty and flavourful. Throughout dinner we had all noticed a shot glass by our dinner settings and we all wondered what they could be for… then the mystery was solved in the groom’s speech!
On the groom’s travels he had bought a bottle of local alcohol in each country he had been to, resulting in a very large booze collection which he had decided, as a married man, he really ought not to have. And so each country (table) got a bottle to try a shot of, our table got some very strong and very horrible rum, we did swap with other tables to try them all. The best one was a lovely creamy liqueur like a fruity Bailey’s. I think North Korea table may have got a raw deal as they had a tiny bottle to share (to have a bigger bottle of booze in North Korea is to be declared a capitalist!).
These are the wedding cakes
As the night went on the main cakes had little babies.
And that sums up the last wedding of the year the boyfriend and I will go to, a very nice day was had by all.

It’s Wedding Time

Happy Sunday, and wow has it been boiling hot this weekend. Hard to believe that England has better weather than Hawaii! As you may remember, the boyfriend and I got invited to a wedding of our lovely friends (see my wedding nazi antics here).
It was a scorcher but very pretty venue, we pulled up to park surrounded by pretty lavender
The wedding and reception was in a hall that was a conversion (an old barn maybe?)
It was very nice inside, modern but still rustic
I really like the arrow slits
I thought the ceremony might be inside here
But it was so nice out..
They decided to brave the outdoors
Luckily we were there a little early and got some shady seats (score)
We still had a good view though. They had a harp player
The whole time I wanted to go up to that harp and have a go on it haha.
After the ceremony was over it was time for dinner
And after dinner it was time for a snoop! This is their cake…
And they got a lot of lovely gifts
And for their favours they chose pick ‘n’ mix sweets
A lovely wedding!

Wedding Nazi

I like organising things, and I have been termed the “holiday nazi” before because of my stringent planning. However, in the post the other day I got a very exciting invite…
To my friends wedding and she said she was still thinking of wedding favours, have I got any ideas?
Err… have I got any ideas?
STEP ASIDE! This is a job for the holiday wedding nazi!!
Ok so here’s my favourite ideas so far..
Lottery tickets or scratch cards
Cutesey, cheap, fun and good for a Saturday wedding as you can announce the draw!
Personalised Rock
Again, pretty cool but remember, rock is the destroyer of teeth
A Photo
You can hire a photo booth and all your guests could get cool photos of your day BUT – pretty pricey!!
There is of course the traditional sugared almonds, personalised M&Ms or chocolate that I always eat during the enormous wait between actually getting your food and sitting down but – why not look at something non-edible to make impatient people like me starve slowly at your venue? Like a cookie cutter
Or miniatures to drink to the happy couple!
Or if you want to be less boozy and more choosy you could give people seeds of your favourite flowers to plant in their gardens. Or candles… but when I thought about the last time I burnt a candle I was left thinking a while…
Not a fan of novelty gifts… who on earth would ever require a novelty wedding foam football keyring?
Who’s idea was that????
On the more functional side of life which the holiday nazi in me likes, check out these luggage tags that double up as name cards…
Here’s the most rubbish idea I came across in my searches – a thoughtful poem or proverb. Err… no. Not allowed, not on my watch you cheapskates.  No favour at all is better than that!
What do you think?
