Cornwall Part 3

The day before our last day in Cornwall Bronte, Chris, Kim and I went to the Eden Project (the others fancied a cider farm and walking).

The Eden Project is a large botanical garden with outside plants and then two biomes, one which creates a rainforest environment and one which creates a Mediterranean environment.

The tickets were about £30 which is pricey but you can visit as many times as you like for a year and walking around you could tell it must cost a lot for the upkeep. Everything was geared towards conservation and sustainability.

We had a nice morning ambling about the plants and reading the plaques. The Mediterranean Biome was a pleasant temperature and they hold weddings in there.

The Rainforest Biome was boiling hot.

It had a waterfall and huge water feature which made it humid as hell, it had it’s own cold room you could rest in part way round. I think in the summer when there are a lot of visitors it must be horrible to queue in that heat.

Roul roul partridges live in the Rainforest Biome as well as lizards.

Once we were done and had had coffee and cake (vital part of all trips out) we took a ride back up to gift shop up a ridge in a tractor and we could see all of the gardens from above, it was built in an old mine.

After that we met Mum, her boyfriend Kerry, Charles and Ellen back at Crantock and took a trip down to the beach.

I made a highly artistic sand sculpture as I’m not much of a sunbather.

Then we looked round the caves and rock pools the others had found a few days before.

One of the caves had carvings in them, they had been head height but over time the sand had eroded away which made them look a lot higher up.

Charles and Chris headed up a sadly unsuccessful crabbing expedition which mainly involved them throwing bits of bacon in the water and poking rocks with a hot pink fishing net.

And then we walked back up the beach which took ages because it was a very large beach. We were lucky with the weather whilst we visited but the sea was freezing.

The next day we left Cornwall and drove back to Wiltshire.

We stopped off in Devon.

For a good old cream tea (for any American readers a cream tea is a pot of tea that comes with scones, clotted cream and jam – not tea with cream in it).

Once back in Devizes, Bronte showed Kim and I the miracle that is Derek’s Deals. Derek is the manager of a Spar shop who seems to have a lot of time on his hands and has become a cult figure in Devizes. Every week he releases a new youtube video every week detailing his savings often with a current affair theme. The video the week we went had Kim Jong Un in it.

Then we visited the white horse carved into the hill near my Mum’s house and petted the cows.

Mum drove Kim and I to Heathrow the next day, Harrods and a lot of the other shops were cashing in on the latest royal wedding. We picked up Kim’s Auntie Debbie a themed tea towel.

Our flight back was a day time flight this time and it was lovely, we had a nice lunch.

And watched some movies, although I was distracted half the flight wondering what the hell this man’s belt was supposed to be made of and why he thought that gold, silver and orange was a winning combination.

Then we had a little snackette before landing.

I had to have my photo taken a billion times re-entering the USA and made a game of it by pulling stupid faces until a security guard told me to stop smiling. Spoilsport. And that was our trip to England.

Martha’s Vineyard Part 1

Last weekend we took a trip through Rhode Island and Massachusetts to get to Martha’s Vineyard for Kimmy’s 27th birthday.

We had to park up and get a shuttle.

The shuttle took us to the ferry which took us over to Martha’s Vineyard. The ferry is the main way on and off the island and the only way to take a car on or off the island although you can fly. We made a buddy on the shuttle called Jaime and she was late to meet up with her friends for a hen party, we were all sailing to Vineyard Haven but we needed to get to Oak Bluffs so we shared an Uber. None of us had used Uber before but it was very cheap, very fast and we got delivered safely to Oak Bluffs by our friendly driver Slobodan.

We stayed at a hotel in Oak Bluffs called the Pequot and there was a mermaid theme there which was fun.

All the buildings in Martha’s Vineyard look very pretty and follow a ‘gingerbread cottage’ theme and the hotel was no different.

Luckily we were able to check in early which was handy so we could dump our things in our room which was very cutesy.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly, after we’d dropped our bags upstairs we had homemade lemonade and cookies on the porch in rocking chairs.

Opposite the hotel was my dream house if I was still a child, all in purple.

So after all that the hotel offered to lend us deck chairs, beach towels and an umbrella and we went 3 minutes down the road to Inkwell Beach. It was great weather and we had a good swim.

I like to shell hunt on the beach and I found part of a quahog shell which was used to make wampum. Wampum was used by the Indians as money.

I added to my weird foot tan that I’ve been cultivating this year from my sandals.

After the beach we went back to the hotel to change and then our hotel had a porch party with live music, wine and cheese. Then we were back out again for a little walk around the park.

There was a beautiful dock we found on our walk.

Then we went to a restaurant called 20byNine that serves food that is like tapas but gastropub dishes.

We had some artisanal ‘deconstructed’ smores (who thinks of these things?).

And then we had a beautiful walk back to the hotel through the houses in Oak Bluffs.

It wasn’t too late so we got to partake in my favourite tv channel – the home shopping network. Yes. Really.

Cromer, Heacham, Holt, Home

Tuesday we had a bit of a road trip, we went out to Cromer first and walked along the sea front and got ice creams.

Did you know in America they don’t have flakes? True story. I explained crabbing to Kim and once again failed to find a t shirt that said “I got crabs in Cromer” for another year running (for the non-locals, Cromer is famous for its crabs being the tastiest and you can catch little crabs off the pier).

Then we went to Heacham to the Lavender Farm and walked through their nice gardens.

And inspected the Lavender; Kimberly’s verdict – BEES. Kim is mortally afraid of bees owing to a childhood incident where a nest of bees had made a home in playground equipment and she climbed on them with disastrous results. As I write this she informs me that they were not bees, they were wasps, or hornets.. She hasn’t told me if they were Africanised or not yet. She also wants to know why I’m dragging up traumatic memories.

We got a Lavender scone and after that we took a trip to Holt to visit Byfords, a big favourite of mine.

And then the long drive home. Every time we go in a car and I drive Kim instantly falls asleep. Every time we go in a car and Kim drives I snap to being super alert and the air is punctuated with my screams of “my god woman pick a lane” and “hands on the wheel!!! Ten and two, ten and two!” Or Kim’s favourite “I choose life!!”. Memories.

Sea Palling

The boyfriend, some friends and I enjoyed lovely Sea Palling on Sunday, it was a scorcher and everyone got sunburnt apart from me – ha ha ha, the boyfriend’s skin is peeling as I type.

I enjoyed a little paddle and I sunned myself, also I found the sand is a very useful bottle holder.

In other news I have booked another holiday after Rome to Ibiza with my family (not to the party bit, to the relaxing bit) so that will hopefully be fun, I’m looking forward to it. Life of a student, eh?

Southwold Seaside

We went to Southwold today
The weather was so warm and the day was beautiful
And we were well protected from scurvy sea dogs
Had a nice sandy stroll
All along the pier were little plaques dedicated to people or for anniversaries. We even saw a few proposals!
We resisted the old fashioned sweet shop… just, although we didn’t resist the ice cream van haha
I can’t believe I’ve never been here before, it’s really pretty! Did you have a nice weekend?
